How many times have you heard someone say, “life is too short to be afraid”? I know that when faced with an uncomfortable situation, I often feel fear (my fear of flying is a great example!). Oftentimes, I fear what others may think of me; and I fear the unknown. It’s not easy to step outside my comfort zone as a professional photographer and yet, in order to grow as an artist and avoid regretting missed opportunities later on, it’s necessary for me to do so. If this sounds like something you can relate to, then read on.
I can tell you that it hasn’t been easy to start my own photography business. In fact, there were times that fear could have held me back. But thanks to the support of family and friends and these helpful hints, I was able to work through my insecurities and press forward with goals and ambitions:
1. What is your fear? What exactly is it that frightens or worries you?
2. Is your fear goal-blocking you? Which decisions is your fear keeping you from making?
3. Would you benefit from not having that fear? How might your life change for the better if you could overcome that fear?
4. Are there resources that can support the process of facing your fear? Ask yourself what steps you might take.
5. Have you talked through your fear? Sometimes it’s helpful to get another perspective from someone you trust.
Remember fear may reveal itself in the form of procrastination or self-doubt. For example, an idea you’ve had may keep falling on the back burner because of fear. Or you may keep telling yourself ‘you’re not ready.’ It can be scary to try new things or take that leap. I had those same fears, but I can assure you of one thing – if I hadn’t faced my own fears, I would not be where I am today. I would not be a branding and portrait photographer. I would not own my own business. Challenge yourself to face your fears and go after your dreams and goals. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or find resources to help you. Life is too short to be afraid, my friends.
